I guess HILLY is the reason why I don’t want to be neither a fucking lady (pardon me, I have a mouth of a sailor), NOR do I want to be ladylike! I’d rather be everything opposite of lady and be kind than be a lady and be a jackass!
1:36 As a Christian that part totally disgusts me: our faith teaches us that God gave charity to all of us by sending Jesus to die for our sins. Not only that but we believe Jesus healed people with diseases that were not well-understood by physicians at the time. Also let’s not forget the story of the rich young ruler… I think to be a good Christian there’s a much stronger case to be made for agreeing to give her the loan as long as y’all discuss how she will pay it back. I could understand rejecting her if it seems unlikely that she will pay back the money. But suggesting that being refused is a better thing for her character was totally inappropriate. If you don’t want to give her the loan, then don’t give her the loan. Shaming her for asking increases the tension of asking for some financial help (it’s hard when you have some ?pride? Like it’s a humbling place to be in) and it is totally unnecessary. Just lording her power as a wealthy employer over Yula Mae. Was there any point in doing this other than showing how nasty she can be?
As a Christian.. I’m doing you a favor? Honey, you’re not a Christian. Lord says help the less fortunate and people who store up the riches on the earth will not inherent the kingdom of God
I hated that Miss Hilly wouldn’t help her when she’s needed $75.00 for her son’s college tuition. Miss Hilly was a real bitch the way she’s treated people.
The way the maid loses all her hope when the husband leaves it’s as if she knows she’s being left with the meaner person who is guaranteed to say no and that she would have more of a chance if he’d stuck around, but the husband was too cowardly to have that conversation so he just left. That’s why Hilly takes so much pleasure with that wicked smile when she’s left alone with her bc she knows. It’s like that feeling you get when you ask the parent you know might say yes but then you get told to ask the parent you know is gonna say no…
I'm glad she didn't lend her that money. You owe someone money and it's like they own you. That woman could have made her work forever without ever paying her all the time lording the fact that she owes her money or that she did her the favor of lending her money. Honestly borrowing money from anybody is a recipe for disaster. It's the best way to end friendships and begin long family disputes.
As a Christian who is presumably familiar with Luke 6 you should be GIVING HER the money without expecting to be paid back, especially as she's your sister in Christ.
If there was a movie about the goings-on between white Southerners and black men of the community you can be sure that the interactions would be far more violent in nature. None of this subdued tension.
If I ever see the personification of hilly she’s getting thrown at her right foot place in literature and a steak pit where the alligators live but that we got it we’re gonna put a lot of fish on her. Alligators like flip-flops like her
Also, the ending, I've heard, was historically inaccurate/received badly, by many film critics. The FOCUS of Freedom, and Perseverance, Strength and Nobility, SHOULD have been centered around the characters of Minnie and Abaline. But, instead, has more of a happy-go-lucky, white-privilege ending, with the audience praising Skeeter and her gracious writing skills that, ultimately, "saved/rescued" Minnie and Abaline to escape their oppression. In reality, though, most African American people are STILL oppressed, STILL beaten, STILL humiliated, disgraced, and treated unfairly, though the year is freakin' 2022!!! It's just that no one talks about it. No one cares to investigate. No one seeks to shed light on the issue, until it, more often than not, effects them, personally.
Gettgharip. Africans sold their people into slavery... rail on about that fact. "It's just that no one talks about it. No one cares to investigate. No one seeks to shed light on the issue, until it, more often than not, effects them, personally." Follow your own logic...
I would like to be as upfront and honest as is humanly possible, because I do not stand for racism, inequality, or injustice anywhere. Ever. But I have a strong feeling that this was fabricated, for the film. And, though I haven't read it, I'd be surprised if it were in the book, as well. I've researched and read a lot about slavery, esp. in the deep south. And how African Americans were taken from their homeland (Africa) from wealthier countries/persons of royalty (like in England, the Netherlands, Spain, etc.), taken across the Atlantic Ocean, sold into slavery (like animals!!! ugh!) upon islands like Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, then up into the Southern States (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc.) where white men bought them from slave traders and put a price on their heads. These people, essentially, lived, worked, and died taking care of white men's properties. Harvesting cotton, picking corn, hanging tobacco. African Americans, for centuries, have been the ears, eyes, and hands of the South. These people harvested the food, cooked the meals, cleaned the houses, even cared for prize-winning horses, out on plantations as far north as Kentucky, for the Derby Races. Not to mention RAISED white women's children. It was also not uncommon for male slave owners to wed African American women, and have children by them, to prevent them from fleeing plantations and escaping their horrible fates of living, working, and dying in chains. Having power, or, even dreaming of utilizing it, was not an option. 'Forbidden' doesn't even begin to describe the danger these people faced if their masters found out that they knew how to read or write. Even for simply knowing HOW TO SPELL one could be flogged, lynched, or beaten to death. Knowledge was power and white people utilized any and all means to keep these people in Ignorance. For, even understanding the CONCEPT of freedom, was FREEDOM itself. So, even though this movie is set in the 1960s (and "times have changed", as some people naively believe) asking a woman of such high status for MONEY, was an unfathomable act. Yule Mae was pretty much ASKING for the worst possible punishment Hilly could dream up. I'm surprised Yule wasn't taken into public and beaten within an inch of her life. (I'm not saying that that is what Hilly SHOULD HAVE DONE, nor that Yule DESERVES to be treated in such a way. Of course she doesn't. Nobody does.) I'm simply wondering, why did the producers/director even include this scene in the film? Because, as documentation and written records will show, this isn't even a fathomable scenario. This would never happen...COULD never happen... not in Mississippi... not anywhere...
I think it’s truly incredible how great an actress Bryce Dallas Howard is. You go from despising her character in this to sympathizing with her character in that Black Mirror episode (Nosedive if you haven’t seen it she’s great in it) really do love her as an actress💗
If I was born in that time - I swear on my life I would have been friends and treated everyone "working for me" with the dignity they so much deserved.
I guess HILLY is the reason why I don’t want to be neither a fucking lady (pardon me, I have a mouth of a sailor), NOR do I want to be ladylike! I’d rather be everything opposite of lady and be kind than be a lady and be a jackass!

the way hilly said “go on” even though she knows damn well what she’s about to say… :(
Hilly attitude is why I don't like Christianity. Too many people like her in central America. Sadly, I live in it.
Don't blame Christianity. Blame the person.

Her husband was a coward and she was a witch b#tch that deserved all she got AND more.

hi
One of the worst combinations in humanity: racism and hypocrisy
Sad

Its so sad that people treated others like this because of their skin color. I just dont get it. 😢
People like Hilly give Christians a bad name. The Bible literally tells people to give to those who have less multiple times.
As a Christian who is presumably familiar with Luke 6 you should be GIVING HER the money without expecting to be paid back, especially as she's your sister in Christ.
well miss hilly, sitting there, sweet as PIE!!

She works hard, raises her twin boys so they both get into college in those times and Hilly thinks she will thank HER one day? Nice.

Working for free to pay off a loan is the SAME as paying off a debt.
Don’t judge a person by the color of their skin but judge them by the content of their character
Raise your hand ✋ if you think hilly is a cold hearted evil jealous manipulate bitch
Hillys heart is so cold she's freezing like ice
